Modern synthetic grass has varied blade heights, a brown thatch layer underneath and a matte finish — close up it reads as lawn rather than astroturf. What it doesn’t do is need mowing, watering, fertiliser or overseeding, and it never goes brown in August or dormant in January.
Almost all of the quality is below the surface. Excavation depth, base material, compaction and drainage decide whether a turf lawn still sits flat in five years or ripples, holds water and smells after the dog uses it.
