Landscape Design – Principles
Landscaping is so much more than putting together various rocks and trees, it requires a finesse between balance and unity to create something truly beautiful. Some people spend their whole lives gardening and landscaping in an effort to perfect this art. Some principles exist to help guide you on your way:
1. Theme – It makes sense to create a theme with your landscape design. Having similar colors, shapes, and environments can help bring your landscape together with unity. As always, you wouldn’t want to overdo it, too much similarity can be boring, but almost all landscape designs need some type of theme.
2. Size – When designing a landscape, the size of the area and the size of the features play a pivotal role. One must take into account the proportion of the area being worked with, compared to the size of the features desired. Large features in a small area can feel cramped, while too small of features in large areas can leave a place feeling empty.
3. Repetition – People crave rhythm in design, structure, and music. It drives us in almost every way. Incorporating some repeating lines, colors, and textures can help drive your landscape. It can help tie your landscape together around a certain focal point. Be careful not to repeat too much, you can leave your landscape feeling stagnant.
