Xeriscape to Save Time and Water
While having a full fledged lawn and garden is enjoyable, many of us simply don’t have the time required to maintain it.
If you are one of many who have trouble maintaining your lawn and garden, I would suggest the recent method of landscaping known as Xeriscaping. This minimal style is a great way to have a great looking yard or garden, without having to spend a lot of time in maintenance or watering.
Many places offer free Xeriscaping lessons in order to encourage water confirmation. If your area is in drought conditions, we can give you advice (i.e. types of plants to grow, how much to water them, etc).
You may have a vision of Xeriscaping as a yard of rocks. This is “zero scaping”, and it is a considerably different concept. It attempts to reduce your yard to require no maintenance whatsoever. Zero scaping is usually rocks only. But this shouldn’t be your goal. Finding the right plants will enable you to set a balance between good looking yard and maintenance.
This might sound like it would be hard to implement without making your yard into a hideous mess, but this is not so at all. The theory involves picking plants that are low-maintenance, then putting them each in a suitable environment. Your first step is figuring out what side of the house to place it on to get the most amount of shade. You will want to learn to group plants with similar water needs.
Before you get started, pick your plants. They should require a low amount of water. This doesn’t mean that you need to pick only desert plants. Simply eliminate the very thirsty plants that require daily watering. We can help you choose plants that are local, drought tolerant and beautiful. Avoid anything too exotic, they usually require a lot of water.
Next, place your plants in idea areas of the yard. If you group plants that require minimal water, you can save an enormous amount of water. If the plants need protection from too much sun or wind, you will have to keep that in mind.
